Minutewomen take down Saints for eighth consecutive victory

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts tennis extended its win streak to eight consecutive matches with a 6-1 victory over Siena at the Bay Road Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon. The Minutewomen claimed the doubles point for the eighth consecutive match and sealed the win with another dominant effort in singles as the team improved to 10-2 overall. Siena dropped to 8-5 with the loss.

"It felt good to be back on the match courts after a nine-day break from competition" head coach Juancarlos Nunez said. "The team has continually proved it can perform and compete at a high level. That does not just happen by accident. The work this team has put in at practice is showing in the match outcomes. We just have to keep taking care of business on the practice courts, so game day comes easy."

Massachusetts again swept doubles play for a 1-0 lead headed into singles matches.

Jodie Lawrence-Taylor and Anna Napadiy were the first to finish with a 6-0 shutout over Natalie Weaver and Ann Phillips at No. 2, before Ashley Avery and Ruth Crawford downed Dilara Spicer and Nanea Perkins at No. 3. Janja Kovacevic and Martina Bocchi made it a sweep with their 7-6 (5) tie-breaker win over Meagan Brown and Kylie Mullaney.

The Maroon and White secured the team's 10th win with victories at No. 1-3 singles in reverse order. Bocchi finished first at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-1 effort over Weaver before Crawford downed Perkins moments later, 6-2, 6-1. Kovacevic sealed it with her 6-1 ,6-4 triumph over Brown.

The Minutewomen continued to win at No. 4 and No. 6 singles. Napadiy bested Becker 6-4, 6-3 before Jasmin Tripathy took down Goehner at No. 6 for a 6-1, 6-2 win.

Massachusetts is on the road next with a Sun., March 24 match at Yale (7-8 overall). Doubles play will begin at 2 p.m.
