Complete Team Effort Gives Massachusetts 64-38 Win Over Richmond

February 27, 2019 | Women's Basketball

George knocks down five triples in second half; Nelson and Philoxy contribute double-figure efforts

AMHERST, Mass. – Led in part by a 15-point effort from senior Jessica George, University of Massachusetts women's basketball picked up a crucial win over Richmond, 64-38, on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. The victory ends a four-game slide for the Minutewomen, who improve to 14-15 on the season and 6-9 in the Atlantic 10. Richmond drops to 8-20 and 5-10 against league squads. All-time, it was also the 200th conference victory for Massachusetts as members of the Atlantic 10.

George, playing on her birthday, was one of several difference-makers in the second half going 5-of-8 from three-point land. Freshman Destiney Philoxy came off the bench to log 11 points and classmate Jessica Nelson added 10 points and seven rebounds, both of which tied career-highs for Nelson.

Junior Hailey Leidel Leidel grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds on the night and added seven points, giving Leidel sole possession of 10th in all-time scoring (1,296) in UMass history. Former Minutewoman Crystal Carroll, who donned the Massachusetts uniform from 1993-97, is ninth with 1,405 points.

Philoxy tied a career-high with six assists, while senior Genesis Rivera's five dimes were a new best for the Venezuela native.

Richmond initially had control with an 11-0 run during a six-minute stretch overlapping the first two quarters. Philoxy ended the run with a beautiful coast-to-coast layup with 4:03 left in the half before Leidel, in a near carbon copy of the previous sequence, added another layup which gave UMass the lead for the balance of the night. Both teams cooled off in second quarter, shooting under 30 percent from the field and 1-of-5 from downtown before the Minutewomen carried a 27-23 lead into the locker room.

The momentum fully swung in Massachusetts' favor with a 15-2 third quarter run as George began to heat up. Another stretch of 15-3 in the fourth quarter put the game away as the Minutewomen swelled their lead to as much as 26.

As the contest neared its end, senior Mackenzie Sullivan and sophomore Lauraine Joensen, both Western Massachusetts natives, each contributed the first two points of their careers to put an exclamation point on the victory.

On the team level, UMass had a 41-23 rebounding edge as well as the upper hand in assists (18-6), bench points (27-11), points off turnovers (13-7) and points in the paint (30-22).

For Richmond, Claire Holt put down 14 points in the loss. Jaide Hinds-Clarke recorded seven rebounds but was limited to six points.

The Minutewomen wrap up the regular season at Rhode Island with a Sat., March 2 game which tips at 2 p.m.
