Philoxy posts career-high 22 points in setback

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball was defeated by George Washington, 66-59, on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. The loss drops the Minutewomen to 13-14 on the season, 5-8 in the Atlantic 10, while GW improves to 9-17 and 6-7 against conference foes.

Freshman Destiney Philoxy highlighted the Minutewomen with a career- and game-high 22 points on the night to go with a team-best six rebounds. Sophomore Bre Hampton-Bey had eight points, five boards and four steals.

It was a tough shooting night for Massachusetts, which was held to 5-of-27 from the field in the first half including an 0-for-13 mark from three-point range. The Colonials battled their own shooting woes with a 25.8 percent mark (8-of-31) in the opening 20 minutes of the contest before taking a 22-12 lead into the locker room at halftime.

GW made quick work to start the third quarter with an 18-4 run in the first four minutes, 30 seconds after the break. Philoxy ended the stretch by converting a three-point play at the other end before senior Jessica George finished a second and-one shortly after.

Philoxy sparked a strong fourth quarter for the home squad with 12 points as the Minutewomen furiously battled back within single digits. Unfortunately for the home squad, the early jump by the Colonials was too much to overcome in the end.

In spite of the result, UMass dominated the paint by a 36-16 margin and committed just nine turnovers on the night. For the Colonials, Kelsi Mahoney put down 21 points while Kayla Mokwuah produced a double-double on 15 points and 16 rebounds.

The Minutewomen are back on the court on Sun., Feb. 24 in a 2 p.m. game at Fordham.
