Massachusetts Downs Siena, 61-55

December 15, 2019 | Women's Basketball

Minutewomen have won five straight for the first time since 2015-16

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball picked up its fifth straight win with a 61-55 triumph over Siena on Sunday at the Mullins Center. The result improves the Minutewomen to 8-3 on the season and gives the squad its first five-game winning streak since the 2015-16 season, while Siena falls to 2-6 on the year.

Senior Hailey Leidel recorded a game-high 19 points and was joined in double figures with 10 apiece from sophomore Destiney Philoxy and freshman Maeve Donnelly. Donnelly added eight rebounds and six blocks, and Philoxy's five assists were all game-highs as well.

It was a slow start for both teams off the opening tip as the sides shot just a combined 25% in the first quarter. The Minutewomen did force four turnovers in the stanza but remained in a defensive battle as Siena carried an 8-7 lead into the second period.

Massachusetts picked up steam with a 19-6 run before the halftime break and never trailed after the 9:30 mark of the second. Thanks in part to a 9-of-13 team shooting performance, the Minutewomen swelled the lead to as much as 16 before heading into the locker room with a 33-20 score. Seven Saints turnovers in the quarter ultimately flipped into 11 points for the Maroon and White.

Siena's Rayshel Brown keyed eight straight points for the visitors late in the third as the Saints trimmed the Massachusetts advantage to single digits. In the final 3:07 Brown tallied four points, two rebounds and a steal, setting up a fourth quarter in which Siena moved within one possession.
Much of the final period saw the teams trade buckets but UMass entered the bonus early in the quarter and sealed the win partly stemming from trips to the free throw line. A layup by Marilen Gerostergiou pulled Siena as close as three with 6:31 on the clock before the home side regained at least a two-possession margin for the rest of the night.

For Siena, Sabrina Piper dropped 17 points on 6-of-17 from the field and Brown pulled down seven rebounds in the loss. The Saints had a 30-18 advantage in the paint as well as 14-5 on the fast break.

Massachusetts now hits the books for Exam Week and returns to action at Iona on Sat., Dec. 21 in a noon contest from New Rochelle, New York.
