October 06, 2019 | Rowing

Massachusetts also raced in the Open 2x and Open 4+

HARTFORD, Conn. – University of Massachusetts rowing began its Fall schedule at the Head of the Riverfront Regatta on Sunday with competition in the Open 8+, Open 2x and Open 4+.

"It was nice to line up and see our UMass boats in the first competition of the season," said head coach Eric Carcich. "We rowed a lot of mixed, even boats today and focused on being physical and moving better as a unit. We had some nice performances with a second place finish in the varsity 8, third place in the 4, and second in the double. We look forward to getting back to work on Tuesday."

UMass began the day at 9:35 a.m. in the Open 8+, with coxswain Natalie DiLeo leading the Minutewomen to second place (16:18.32) less than three seconds behind Trinity. Top-10 UMass boats also crossed the finish line seventh (16:48) and No. 10 (17:01.03).

The Maroon and White logged another second place effort in the Open 2x as the double of Nailah Pierce and Riley Anderson clocked a time of 19:57.56. UMass also claimed the No. 4-7 spots in the race over a two minute, 19 second span.

Last on the day's docket was the Open 4+, which saw UMass place third (19:52.99) under the guidance of coxswain Anne Madeiros. Fellow coxswains Emma Calnan (5th, 20:19.78) and DiLeo (7th, 20:25.37) also helped the squad claim top-10 finishes in the field of 22.
