Late Goal Lifts UNH Over Field Hockey, 2-1

October 06, 2019 | Field Hockey

Minutewomen denied on last-second chance at equalizer

AMHERST, Mass. – New Hampshire's Finn Caron broke a 1-1 tie with just 2:04 remaining and the Wildcats held off a furious push from University of Massachusetts field hockey, holding on for a 2-1 result on Sunday at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. UMass falls to 4-7 after the tough setback and UNH moves to 6-5 overall.

The Maroon and White were mere inches from knotting the score even in the final seconds, but unable to find the equalizer. Senior Sophie de Jonge fed the ball into the circle and the pass came to UNH goalkeeper Jemma Woods. Freshman Jess Beech batted away at the ball and slipped it through Woods, but UNH's Bloem van den Brekel was camped on the goal line for the defensive save as time expired.

For the Minutewomen, junior goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder had four saves before being lifted for an extra field player after Caron's game-winning goal. Woods had six saves for the Wildcats.

UNH was first to the scoreboard in the sixth minute of the contest, as Bailey Fanikos intercepted a cross-circle pass just north of the penalty spot and quickly rocketed a shot into the cage–her second goal of the season.

In the second quarter UMass leveled the score at one-apiece on a nice reverse-stick shot from sophomore Katherine Furry. Junior Lucy Cooper sent a pass along the baseline and the carom off of Woods came in front to Furry for her second goal.
Furry found Cooper in the circle on a beautiful through ball in the 33rd minute, but Cooper's shot sailed just wide of the cage after dodging around Woods. Then in the 50th minute, van Tonder made a diving save on a UNH penalty corner before the UMass defense forced a second shot wide.

Caron buried the eventual game-winner on a reverse-stick shot that snuck inside the left post.

On the day, the Minutewomen earned five penalty corners to four for UNH, while the home side also led in shots on goal, 9-6.

Massachusetts resumes Atlantic 10 Conference play on Fri., Oct. 11, traveling to Davidson for a 5 p.m. match at Belk Turf Field.
