Massachusetts Defeats Davidson, 3-1
October 11, 2019 | Field Hockey
Cooper sparks offense with goal, two assists; van Tonder and Davies share time in goal
In goal both junior Marlise van Tonder and redshirt sophomore Megan Davies saw one half of action, with van Tonder logging three saves in the first half before Davies closed the door with two stops in the final 30 minutes. For Davidson Sarah Zeszotarski made five saves.
The Minutewomen came out firing right out of the gate with two quick circle entries, before taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute. Cooper came sprinting down the left sideline and sent a pass into the circle with freshman Bella Ianni in perfect position to deflect the feed over Zeszotarski. It was her third goal of the season.

Davidson quickly had an opportunity to equalize with a penalty corner, but van Tonder stood tall to deny two quick Wildcat chances.
Cooper once again set up a goal in the 11th minute as UMass doubled its lead to 2-0. Cooper came along the baseline into the circle and evaded two Davidson defenders. She then connected with sophomore Katherine Furry, who made a nice spin move around a diving Zeszotarski and put the ball into the open cage for Furry's third goal.

Then, in the 21st minute Cooper wrapped up the night's scoring for the visiting side with her fourth tally of the year. Freshman Emily Crawford played a bouncing ball in the right side of the circle and put a centering pass in front of Cooper. Her one-timer bounced off of the goalkeeper and into the upper left part of the cage.

Davies and the UMass penalty corner defense denied the Wildcats once again in the 42nd minute, keeping the side's lone shot from getting through.
Davidson ended the shutout bid with just under four minutes to go in regulation, when Julia Smith capitalized on a penalty stroke opportunity and brought the match to its final score of 3-1.
The Maroon and White held a 9-6 edge in shots on goal, however Davidson earned three penalty corners to just two for the visiting side.
Massachusetts now enjoys an idle Sunday coming up on Oct. 13 and turns its attention to a Fri., Oct. 18 game at Lock Haven, which is set for a 3 p.m. start.
