UMass wraps up two-game road swing Sunday at La Salle
DAYTON, Ohio – University of Massachusetts women's basketball was unable to battle back from an early Dayton jump as the Minutewomen were defeated, 75-47, on Wednesday night at UD Arena. The loss drops UMass to 9-7 (1-1 Atlantic 10) and the Flyers are now 7-6 (2-0 Atlantic 10).
It was a difficult shooting night for the Maroon and White, who were held to just 29 percent (16-of-55) from the field including 26 percent (10-of-38) in the first three quarters of play. Sophomore Bre Hampton-Bey was the lone double-digit scorer for Massachusetts while freshman Asia McCoy contributed seven points and a team-high five rebounds.
Out of the opening tip the teams traded buckets as well as the lead, with the Minutewomen snagging a 7-6 first quarter advantage when junior Hailey Leidel knocked down a three-pointer at the 7:59 mark. Dayton, however, would counter with a 12-2 run to regain the lead and did not look back.
The Flyers shot lights out in the second stanza and largely controlled the rebounding game, posting an even 50 percent from the field in the period and taking a 40-16 lead into halftime.
The Minutewomen did force 21 Dayton turnovers on the night and put together a 6-0 run in the fourth quarter thanks in part to Hampton-Bey's work at the free throw line. But by that point, UD had built a margin too large to overcome.
For Dayton, Jayla Scaife put down 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting and Shakeela Fowler narrowly missed a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Massachusetts caps a two-game road swing on Sun., Jan. 13 at La Salle. Opening tip from Philadelphia is slated for 2 p.m. at Tom Gola Arena.
