Minutewomen next travel to Richmond for pivotal pair of Atlantic 10 matches
AMHERST, Mass. – Providence's Izzy Mendez scored in the 41st minute with what proved to be the lone tally for either side, as the Friars escaped with a 1-0 win over the UMass field hockey team on Sunday at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. With the loss, the Minutewomen fall to 5-7 on the season, while Providence improves to 7-5.
Mendez was set up on the goal by Natalie Mitchell in a sequence that began when the Friars' circle entry was broken up. The loose ball came to the stick of Mitchell near the left post before she dealt a pass across the cage to Mendez for her sixth goal of the season.
UMass freshman goalkeeper Johanna von dem Borne made four saves and was lifted in the 66th minute for a kicking back in graduate student Clodagh Moloney. For Providence, Lydia Rice had five stops on the day.
The Minutewomen marked a strong first half with the game's first scoring chance. After sophomore Lucy Cooper inserted a penalty corner in just the second minute, sophomore Georgie McTear rattled off two quick shots and Moloney added another, but Rice stood tall to deny the opportunity.
Looking to equalize, two more corner attempts came for UMass in the second stanza, but once again Rice was outstanding in goal to ultimately preserve the shutout. In the waning minutes of regulation with von dem Borne pulled, the home side had one final possession in the attacking third, but could not capitalize.
Both teams had five on-target shots in the defensive battle and penalty corners came at a premium as Massachusetts held just a 3-2 edge.
UMass now hits the road to Richmond, Virginia for a pair of Atlantic 10 matches that begins Fri., Oct. 5 with a 3 p.m. game at the University of Richmond.
