Curtis' Time To Shine
ā¢ Redshirt junior quarterback Michael Curtis stepped into the starting role against Charlotte and finished the day 12-of-19 passing for 189 yards and two touchdown passes alongside nine rushes for 35 yards and two more scores.
ā¢ Curtis became the first UMass quarterback with two scoring tungs and two touchdown passes in the same game since Todd Bankhead (1998-99) did so against Northwestern State in the NCAA I-AA Semifinal Round on Dec. 12, 1998.
ā¢ Curtis assumed the starting duties for the game after No. 1 QB Andrew Ford and No. 2 QB Ross Comis suffered injuries during the game at FIU on Sept. 15, 2018.
The Curious Case of Bryton Barr
ā¢ Graduate student middle linebacker Bryton Barr leads NCAA FBS in tackles per game (14.2) and total tackles (71) through five games. Barr had at least 10 tackles in each of the last four games, including at Boston College (17), at Georgia Southern (10), at FIU (15) and Charlotte (21).
ā¢ Barr is in his seventh season of collegiate football and second with the Minutemen. He was a member of the Towson football program from 2012-16 before he transferred to Massachusetts ahead of the 2017 campaign. Barr missed 1,091 consecutive days due to back-to-back-to-back injuries at Towson spanning from Sept. 8, 2013 through Sept. 3, 2016.
Behaving Ourselves
Massachusetts ranks among the least-penalized teams in the country during 2018, and is 14th in fewest penalty yards per game (38.40) and 23rd in fewest penalties per game (5.00). Both are the best numbers of head coach Mark Whipple's current tenure (2014-present).
Kick It Into High Gear
ā¢ Senior running back and return specialist Marquis Young brought back the opening kickoff against Charlotte for a 93-yard touchdown.Ā
ā¢ It was the team's first kickoff returned for a touchdown since James Allen did so from 97 yards away at Bowling Green on Oct. 10, 2015. It was also the first game-opening kickoff returned for points since Khary Bailey-Smith started the game with a kick return touchdown against Western Michigan on Oct. 26, 2013.
