September 17, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Jenny Hipp, Lauren Bonavita and Peyton Ryan all honored after performance vs. Eastern Michigan.
AMHERST, Mass. - Following impressive performances in the 6-1 win over Eastern Michigan on Sunday afternoon, UMass women's soccer standouts Jenny Hipp (Frankfurt, Germany), Lauren Bonavita (Hanson, Mass.), and Peyton Ryan (Marietta, Ga.) were honored on Monday with weekly awards from the Atlantic 10. Hipp was named the A-10 Offensive Player of the Week, while Bonavita was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week. Ryan was named the A-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week for her first career honor.
UMass won its fourth consecutive match with the win over the Eagles which entered the weekend on a four-game win streak of its own after a 1-0 victory at Connecticut on Friday. Over that stretch, the Minutewomen have outscored opponents 21-1 with a streak of 342 minutes without allowing a goal. For the year, the Maroon and White has 24 goals through seven games matching the entire goal total for the 2017 season. UMass is having its best stretch of play since the 1997 squad had a 24-2 goal differential over the first six games of that season.
In addition to the A-10 recognition, Hipp and Bonavita were also recognized by the New England Soccer Journal on Monday as the region's Offensive and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Hipp was a major part of the UMass offense in the win over Eastern Michigan as she had a hand in five of the team's six goals. The sophomore finished the match with two goals, three assists and four shots in 55 minutes of action. Her seven points were a single-match career-best total as were her two goals and three assists. Hipp scored the opening goal of the match in the 25', assisted the second in the 48', scored again in the 50' and then had assists on goals in the 87' and 90' as well.
Bonavita had her first career multi-goal game in the contest. The freshman finished the match with two goals, one assist, and five shots in 46 minutes of play. Her two goals and five points were both career-best marks and extended her point streak to four straight matches (three straight with at least a goal).
Ryan was strong in net once again despite allowing a goal for the first time in four matches. The senior finished the game with four saves while allowing just one goal – the first in over 342 prior scoreless minutes of play. She faced nine shots as she went the full 90 minutes in goal. Several of Ryan's saves were impressive including two full-stretch, diving stops. She also prevented a loose ball from being chipped into goal following a corner kick in the second half which popped towards goal from a scrum inside the six-yard box. Her four saves were one shy of her season high this year.
The Minutewomen will begin Atlantic 10 play this Thursday (4 PM) at Rudd Field as Duquesne visits. Admission is free to all and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription).
