Massachusetts plays a doubleheader against Stony Brook and Bryant on Sat., May 5
Logan Greene went 2-for-5 at the plate and Marcus Fry had a 2-for-4 day with two RBIs, while Eddy Hart scored twice and worked four walks. Collectively, the Minutemen drew 15 free passes.
After a three-run first inning, the Black Bears put up a four-spot in the second via back-to-back-to-back homers. That gave the visitors a 7-1 advantage at the time, which held until the top of the fifth when Christopher Bec clubbed his second long ball of the day, a three-run shot.
Maine scored eight times in the seventh, an inning that saw the Black Bears hit three consecutive home runs for a second time. Hernen Sardinas opened up with a grand slam before Bec and Danny Casals left the yard.
UMass scored once in the first and again in the fifth through eighth innings. Justen Voghel homered in the sixth and both Greene and Fry had RBI doubles.
On the bump, Maine's Chris Murphy (1-5) received the win, while the loss went to Sam Cooper (0-3).
The setback drops the Minutemen to 13-22 on the season and Maine is now 12-28. UMass will look to bounce back on Sat., May 5 as the squad faces Stony Brook (noon) and Bryant (3:30 p.m.) in a doubleheader from Stony Brook's Joe Nathan Field.
