Fordham Takes Doubleheader From UMass Baseball
May 11, 2018 | Baseball
Minutemen receive strong starting pitching contributions, but fall short at the plate
AMHERST, Mass. – Despite strong starting pitching performances from Justin Lasko and Sean Harney, University of Massachusetts baseball fell to Fordham in both games of the sides' doubleheader, 3-0 and 4-1, on Friday at Earl Lorden Field. The twinbill was scheduled as a result of impending inclement weather across Western Massachusetts expected on Saturday.
Game 1
Fordham 3, Massachusetts 0 (Box Score)
A complete game effort by Fordham's Reiss Knehr was the difference as Massachusetts could not crack into the run column.
After a scoreless first three frames, the Rams capitalized on a defensive miscue to get on the board. Matt Tarabek reached with one out after a fielding error and moved into scoring position as a result of an infield single. Two batters later, Jake Baker doubled to right field to cross Tarabek.
In the top of the sixth, Fordham doubled its lead to 2-0 when Colton Snelling smacked a double to deep right, plating C.J. Vasquez all the way from first base. That score remained until the eighth, as the visitors would take advantage of a two-out error on a groundball that scored Tarabek from second base.
Keith Linnane went 2-for-2 with a walk.
Knehr (5-3) posted 11 strikeouts and walked three. Although he received the loss, Lasko (4-4) went six innings and fanned six while walking just one. He was responsible for a single earned run on eight hits.
Game 2
Fordham 4, Massachusetts 1 (Box Score)
Although the Minutemen knotted the score at one-apiece in the fourth inning, Fordham would proceed to tally three runs in the game's final two frames en route to completing the doubleheader sweep. Justen Voghel had a 2-for-4 line in the nightcap, driving in the lone run of the game for UMass.
Fordham opened the scoring in the top of the first. Billy Godrick led off the game with a walk and ended up on third as a result of a single followed by an additional walk. Godrick then came 90 feet home when Justin Bardwell grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.
The Minutemen would answer in the last of the fourth when Voghel's single through the left side plated Logan Greene. Greene led off with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a fly out by Alec Norton.
Godrick scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the eighth on a triple off the bat of Alvin Melendez. Tarabek would go on to lace an RBI double in the ninth before scoring himself in part as a result of a throwing error.
Fordham's Matt Mikulski pocketed the victory (4-4) on the rubber and Kyle Martin earned his ninth save. Harney (2-2) took the loss in spite of an eight-inning effort during which he allowed a pair of runs and struck out two.
UMass and Fordham will wrap up their three-game series on Sun., May 13 with a noon game at Earl Lorden Field. Prior to the contest, the Minutemen will recognize their six-member Class of 2018 in an on-field ceremony scheduled for 11:45 a.m.
