Smith and Voghel post 2-for-4 efforts in Beanpot Semifinal loss
Massachusetts will face either Boston College or Harvard in the Beanpot Consolation Game on Tues., April 10 at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Massachusetts.
Three Minutemen in Alec Norton, Connor Smith, and Justen Voghel turned in 2-for-4 performances and both Marcus Fry and Nolan Kessinger drove in a pair of runs. Ryan Lever reached base safely for a career-high 17th consecutive game and Fry did so for the 11th straight contest.
NU struck with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. After loading the bases with nobody out, Ian Fair reached on a fielder's choice that scored Jake Farrell. John Mazza then grounded out back to UMass starter Anthony Videtto, bringing in Max Burt.
The bottom half of the frame saw the Minutemen claw back within one. On a 1-2 pitch, Norton laced a double into the left field corner, putting Smith on third base. Fry proceeded to ground out to Burt at shortstop, allowing Smith to cross the plate before Norton was ultimately stranded at third base.
Massachusetts grabbed a 6-2 lead with a five-run fourth in which it sent 10 batters to the plate. Cooper Mrowka smoked a leadoff double down the left field line, scoring as a result of singles by Smith and Voghel. Following a pitching change, Norton worked a four-pitch walk to load the bases and Fry was hit by a pitch, plating Smith.
Voghel and Norton would score on a base hit by Eddy Hart and a Lever walk, respectively, rounding out the inning's scoring. In the sixth, Kessinger was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, crossing Fry and pushing the lead to five.
The Huskies recovered three in the top of the seventh to cut the UMass advantage to 7-5. In the top of the eighth, Northeastern walked the bases loaded with one out before Peterson sent a 2-2 pitch into the right field stands for a grand slam that put the Huskies on top 9-7. In the ninth Fair poked a single through the right side to knock in Farrell and bring the game to a 10-7 score in favor of NU.
Massachusetts final run came by way of Norton's second two-bagger into the left field corner that brought Smith around from first base.
The win on the mound went to Northeastern's Sam Jacobsak (1-0) after working an inning of scoreless baseball during which he allowed one hit and struck out two. Andrew Misiaszek closed the door with a two-inning save.
Zach Clevenger (0-1) took the loss, responsible for the go-ahead run in conjunction with Peterson's grand slam. Videtto received a no-decision, going 6.2 innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk, recording two strikeouts.
The Minutemen are scheduled to return to Eastern Massachusetts on Wed., April 4 for 4 p.m. non-conference tilt at Boston College.
