Minutemen Win Five Events On Day Two Of Ocean State Invitational

Junior Evan Burton, one of five event winners on the day, entered UMass’ top-five all time in discus.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Massachusetts men's track and field saw five individuals win events on day two of the unscored Ocean State Invitational on Saturday. Minutemen took the top spots in the 3,000 meter run, 110 meter hurdles, pole vault, discus and long jump with three setting New England qualifying marks.

Junior Evan Burton won discus with a PR of 161 feet, 6 inches that landed him fourth all-time in UMass history and met the New England standard. Three more Minutemen placed in the top eight in discus as freshman Coston O'Brien (138'11"), junior Jonathan Collins (130'5") and freshman Dermotheo Walden (128'8") took sixth seventh and eighth, respectively.

Burton also claimed third in shot put with a toss of 48 feet, 2.5 inches. O'Brien was seventh in the event with a mark of 44 feet, 6.25 inches.

Junior Jake DeGrace was won of two winners on the track for the Minutemen, taking first in 110 meter hurdles with a New England-qualifying time of 14.81 seconds. Freshman Thomas O'Donoghue followed in fifth at 16.11 seconds.

Senior John Chuma cleared 15 feet 5.5 inches to claim first in pole vault, a New England qualifier. Sophomore Mason Lord was third at 14 feet, 5.5 inches.

Junior John Long threw 190 feet, 7 inches to win javelin, while senior Samuel Downes was third at 173 feet, 1 inch.

In the 3,000 meter run, junior Michael Famiglietti was victorious with a time of 8 minutes, 36.41 seconds and freshman Adam Cook crossed the finish line in fourth at 8 minutes, 54.07 seconds.

In long jump, junior Myles McDermott took second in long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 1 inch and freshman Sam Darkwa Jr. was eighth at 20 feet, 0.25 inches. Darkwa Jr. also landed in the top eight in triple jump with a mark of 42 feet, 3.5 inches.

Sophomore Thomas O'Donoghue claimed fifth in high jump at 6 feet, 0.75 inches and freshman Michael Long followed in sixth at 5 feet, 10.75 inches.

Three Minutemen placed in the top eight in the 200 meter dash, led by senior Connor Williams in fifth (22.75), while sophomore Hayden Gray (22.80) and freshman David Edevbie Jr. (22.90) followed in sixth and seventh, respectively. In the 100 meter dash, Gray was sixth (11.17) and Edevbie Jr. was seventh (11.20).

UMass will return to action next week, with the Holy Cross Decathlon on April 18 and 19, the Larry Ellis Invitational on April 20 and 21 and the Holy Cross Invitational on April 21.
