UMass Posts Season-High 15 Hits In 7-3 Win Over UC Santa Barbara

The Minutewomen racked up 15 hits while freshman Kiara Oliver struck out a career-high 10 batters.
ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Massachusetts softball team racked up a season-high 15 hits as they defeated UC Santa Barbara 7-3 in the final day of the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic. Jena Cozza, Erin Stacevicz and Hannah Bunker led the way for the UMass (7-6 Overall) offense with three hits each while Kiara Oliver struck out a career-high 10 batters on her way to picking up her third win of the season.
Madison Gimpl picked up one of her two RBI in the game in the first at-bat for UMass, hitting a single to center field to score Stacevicz and put the Minutewomen ahead 1-0 early.
UCSB (8-12 Overall) took their only lead of the morning with a two-run home run in the following inning to go up 2-1 before Oliver settled in by retiring seven straight batters after allowing the homer. The Gauchos would tie things up with their third and final run with a two-out single in the fifth to knot it at 3-3.
The Minutewomen manufactured a pair of runs in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead on a Stacevicz stolen base after a missed squeeze opportunity prior to Gimpl's second RBI of the day to bring in Kaitlyn Stavinoha.
Cozza regained the lead for UMass in the sixth, breaking the 3-3 tie with a leadoff solo home run to left field for her eighth of the season. With the homer, Cozza moved into sole possession of fourth on the all-time UMass home run list with 29 in her career.
The Minutewomen extended their lead to four runs heading into the bottom half of the seventh inning with three runs on five hits and an error to go up 7-3. Melissa Garcia drove in the first run of the inning on a RBI double down the left field line to score Bunker all the way from first before Cozza reached first safely on a throwing error to bring in Alyssa Lyon with two outs. Stacevicz followed with a RBI single that ricocheted off the UCSB pitcher to score Jackie Kelley for the final run of the morning.
UMass returns to the field next weekend for in Louisville, Ky. for a five-game weekend, beginning with a pair of matchups against Eastern Michigan on Friday, March 9 at 12:30 p.m. and host Louisville at 5:30 p.m.
