Minutemen look to pocket series rubber game on Sunday at noon
RICHMOND, Va. – Marcus Fry went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and Brooks Knapek went eight innings on the mound as University of Massachusetts baseball picked up a 2-1 win over Richmond on Saturday at Pitt Field.
Â
Knapek (2-2) earned the victory on the bump, surrendering just two hits, five walks and Richmond's lone run while logging five strikeouts. It was the furthest Knapek has worked this season and just two-thirds of an inning short of his longest outing, which came during his freshman campaign in April 2017.
Â
The Spiders were first to the scoreboard in the second inning in part as a result of some small ball. Kyle Schmidt worked a leadoff walk before a pair of bunts moved Schmidt to third base. Jordan Schulefand then sent a 2-2 pitch to right field for a sacrifice fly that scored Schmidt and ultimately gave Richmond its only run of the afternoon.
Â
Massachusetts evened the score at one-apiece in the top of the fifth. Justen Voghel opened the frame with a left-center field single, advancing on a Logan Greene sacrifice bunt and coming around when Fry sent an 0-1 offering down the right field line and into the corner for two bases.
Â
In the inning that followed, UMass claimed the lead for good. A fly ball to center field by Ryan Lever coupled with a fielding error quickly put Lever on third before a one-out single by Cooper Mrowka plated the former and gave Mrowka his ninth RBI of the season.
Â
Dylan Robinson came up with a highlight-reel catch that helped UMass preserve its advantage down the stretch. In the bottom of the eighth inning with a runner on first, Richmond's Tyler Plantier clubbed a high fly ball to deep left field before Robinson made the leaping catch and crashed into the wall. Robinson quickly fired back into the infield and allowed Mrowka to double up Daniel Brumbaugh at first, ending the inning.
Â
UMass' Casey Aubin shut the door with two strikeouts in the ninth to secure his first save, cementing the outcome after the Spiders put runners on first and second base.
Â
Aaron Winkler (2-2) was hooked with the loss, being charged with two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out five.
Â
Massachusetts is 7-5 following the win and an even 1-1 in the Atlantic 10. The loss for Richmond snaps the Spiders' five-game winning streak and drops the squad to 13-9 and 1-1 against A-10 opponents.
