Pitching Helps Minutemen Over Central Connecticut, 4-2

March 11, 2018 | Baseball

Lasko strikes out five before Knapek brothers seal deal over final five innings

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and had all the offense it would need as the Minutemen defeated Central Connecticut, 4-2, on Sunday at the New England Baseball Complex.

Eddy Hart and Nolan Kessinger each extended their respective reached base streaks to five consecutive games. Dating back to last season, Hart has reached base in 11 straight contests.

UMass capitalized on two errors to get on the board in the first inning. Ryan Lever sent a grounder to shortstop with one out, advancing to second base on an errant throw. On a subsequent two-out error Lever would score on a play that allowed Alec Norton to reach and continued the inning.

In the top of the second the Minutemen added two more, beginning when Lever dropped a two-bagger into left field that brought Brett Evangelista home. Hart would then cross the plate on a wild pitch with Kessinger at the dish, moving the score to 3-0 in favor of Massachusetts.

The eighth saw UMass wrap up the squad's scoring for the day when Marcus Fry singled to right field, bringing in Cooper Mrowka.

Mitch Guilmette accounted for both of CCSU's runs by way of the long ball, leaving the yard in both the fourth and ninth innings. Aside from Guilmette's home runs, no Blue Devils baserunner advanced past first base on the day.

Brooks Knapek (1-1) earned the win after four no-hit innings of relief, during which he struck out four and surrendered just one walk. His brother, Carter Knapek, then entered for the ninth and earned his first career save. Justin Lasko started on the hill for the Minutemen, working four innings and allowing four hits and one run while striking out five.

Central Connecticut's Mike Appel (2-1) received the loss, going three innings and was charged with as many runs (two earned), striking out five and walking two.

UMass is 2-3 after the win while the Blue Devils drop to 2-5 on the season.

The Minutemen now head south to Kissimmee, Florida and open a three-game series with Bucknell on Mon., March 12 at 11 a.m.
