Hockey Comes Back To Tie BU On The Road, 3-3

February 09, 2018 | Hockey

Chaffee scored his team-leading 12th of the season for the Minutemen to knot things up in the third period.

BOSTON – University of Massachusetts erased a two-goal deficit in the third period to rally for a 3-3 tie on the road at Boston University on Friday. The Minutemen are now 12-16-2 overall and 6-12-2 in Hockey East, while the Terriers sit at 15-11-3 on the year and 10-7-3 in league action.

"We're an extremely young hockey team and I like that," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I like the fact that we start six freshmen most nights, but unfortunately we played like a young team to start the game. We can't beat BU if we don't out-compete them and the first period, I thought BU competed much harder than we did. I didn't think it was until the third period that that we actually started to play at a level that we need to play to compete against them. I thought in the third, we possessed the puck a lot better, made plays, and, even though we're a young team, I think we're capable of doing that. I guess it's a step forward for us. We haven't been able to win much on the road, especially against the top teams in our league, and found a way to get a point tonight. So I guess that's a step forward for us."

UMass opened the scoring at the 7:45 mark of the first when freshman Mario Ferraro picked off a BU pass, skated the puck into the Terriers' zone and found sophomore Griff Jeszka in the slot for the tally.

However, BU responded just 34 seconds later with Shane Bowers depositing a rebound from Logan Cockerill into the UMass net.

The Terriers then took the lead with 4.5 seconds to go in the frame as Hank Crone advanced the puck to Bobo Carpenter who scored on a breakaway to give Boston University the 2-1 edge.

Bowers gave BU a two-goal cushion 2:02 into the second period, cleaning up a loose puck in the crease on the power play with Dante Fabbro and Brady Tkachuk collecting the assists.

Sophomore Jack Suter redirected in an Austin Albrecht shot at the 2:17 mark of the third to bring the Minutemen back to within one. Freshman John Leonard earned an assist on the play, as well.

Freshman Mitchell Chaffee then came up with the equalizer for UMass 12:38 into the third, dropping the puck off for redshirt senior Niko Rufo and crashing the net to clean up the rebound for his 12th of the season.

With the secondary assist on Chaffee's goal, his second helper of the night, Ferraro registered his 20th point of the season, matching Brandon Montour's total (20 points in 2014-15) for most points by a freshman defenseman in UMass' Hockey East era.

Chaffee's tally marked his 12th of the year, to equal the third-highest goal total by a UMass freshman in the program's Hockey East era and the most for a Minuteman rookie since Michael Pereira in 2010-11.

BU out-shot UMass 41-23 in the contest and went 1-for-1 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 0-for-2. UMass won 33 of 54 faceoffs 61.1% on the evening, paced by Suter (9-for-14, 64.3%) and freshman George Mika (6-for-7, 85.7%).

Freshman Matt Murray totaled 38 saves for the Minutemen, one shy of matching his career high, while Jake Oettinger had 20 stops for the Terriers.

UMass will be back in action tomorrow, Feb. 10, when the squad will play host to UMass Lowell at 7 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
