Hampton-Bey, Leidel post double-figure scoring efforts in setback

AMHERST, Mass. – A 17-2 first quarter Dayton run set the tone early as the Flyers came away with a 78-49 victory over the UMass women's basketball team on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. Bre Hampton-Bey led the Minutewomen with 14 points while Hailey Leidel added 11 of her own on the night.

Maggie Mulligan had 14 rebounds plus a pair of blocks, while Hampton-Bey had five assists to go with two steals.

UMass opened the night's scoring when Leidel found Paige McCormick in the left corner for a triple, but from there the Flyers would counter with 13 of the game's next 15 points. Dayton would finish the quarter out-rebounding the Minutewomen by a 21-8 margin, including turning nine offensive boards into 14 second chance points.

The second quarter was witness to a 46.2 percent (6-of-13) UMass effort from the field as well as the advantage on the glass, but turnovers plagued the Minutewomen in the period progressed. Mulligan beat the halftime buzzer with a jumper from the left elbow, sending the teams into the locker room with the score at 39-27 in favor of UD.

In the final 20 minutes of play UMass showed much improved ball control with just three turnovers, but difficulty shooting helped the Flyers continue to extend their advantage as the game reached the home stretch.

Dayton saw two double-double performances in Alex Harris (16 points, 12 rebounds) and JaVonna Layfield (12 points, 17 rebounds), while the former also logged four blocks. Lauren Cannatelli turned in a game-high 26 points.

UMass falls to 11-13 with the loss, including a 3-8 record in the Atlantic 10. UD, which received votes in the most recent AP Top 25 poll, has now won 13 consecutive games and improves to 19-4 (12-0 A-10).

The Minutewomen return to action on Sun., Feb. 11, beginning a two-game road swing at George Mason in Fairfax, Virginia.
