Third Quarter Surge Guides George Mason Over Women’s Basketball, 71-60

February 11, 2018 | Women's Basketball

Hampton-Bey leads Massachusetts with 17 points in setback

FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason's Natalie Butler had 30 points and came down with 19 rebounds as the Patriots defeated the UMass women's basketball team, 71-60, on Sunday afternoon at EagleBank Arena.

Bre Hampton-Bey had 17 points for the Minutewomen and Hailey Leidel added 12 in the loss. Maggie Mulligan had eight points and eight rebounds, ending a four-game streak of double-figure boards for the senior. Paige McCormick had four assists and Mulligan logged seven blocks, tying her career-high set against Saint Joseph's on Jan. 13.

Leidel's day included a pair of three-point baskets, bringing the sophomore's season total to 73. She needs just five more to match the UMass single-season record in that category (78), first set in 2010-11 by Cerie Mosgrove before Leidel tied it as a freshman in 2016-17.

Massachusetts built momentum early with an 11-2 run to open the game. Leah McDerment, Leidel and Hampton-Bey all converted from downtown in the stretch, helping the Minutewomen open the game making three of their first four triples. That last make by Hampton-Bey at the 6:05 mark forced George Mason to call timeout before the sides exchanged baskets to close the quarter.

Hampton-Bey came up with a beautiful block with just over five minutes left in the opening period, sprinting coast-to-coast to deny a layup attempt by Nicole Cardaño-Hillary.

After both teams continued to trade points early in the second stanza, a quick 5-0 run by UMass gave the Minutewomen a 25-19 advantage. Mason, however, would quickly answer with an 11-5 sequence to knot the score even at 30-30. Hampton-Bey wrapped up the half with a bucket to beat the buzzer, driving for a left-hand layup that gave the visitors a 32-30 advantage heading into the locker room.

Cardaño-Hillary helped turn the tables in favor of George Mason with a 3-of-4 performance beyond the arc. The Patriots stretched their lead to double-digits and would not relinquish the advantage. Despite efforts by UMass to chip away in the final 10 minutes, the Mason lead would not sink below 10 points.

As a team, UMass went 21-of-57 (36.8 percent) from the field and 12-of-15 (80 percent) from the free throw line. Mason turned in a 23-of-65 (35.4 percent) shooting effort and a 19-of-24 (79.2 percent) mark at the charity stripe.

Cardaño-Hillary had 19 points for Mason. Butler has now amassed 25 consecutive double-doubles, which leads the nation and is the fourth-longest streak in Division I women's basketball history.

The loss drops the Minutewomen to 11-14 on the season including a 3-9 mark in the Atlantic 10. George Mason moves to 19-7 overall and 8-4 against league opponents.

UMass is back on the hardwood on Wed., Feb. 14, taking on George Washington at 7 p.m. to wrap up a two-game road trip.
