Leidel sets single season UMass record for made three-point field goals
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Massachusetts sophomore Hailey Leidel made her 78th and 79th three-point field goals of the season, setting a single season UMass record, as the Minutewomen defeated Richmond, 58-49, on Wednesday night in Atlantic 10 action at the Robins Center.
Leidel tied the previous record of 78 threes on a right wing triple late in the first quarter, receiving a feed from Jessica George. With just over a minute remaining in the third stanza, the Brownstown, Michigan native logged her 79th make from straight away, surpassing the previous record for a campaign previously set by Leidel (2016-17) and Cerie Mosgrove (2010-11).
Leah McDerment led Massachusetts with 13 points on 5-of-10 from the floor while Leidel finished the night with 12 points. Maggie Mulligan finished just short of her third straight double-double, turning in nine points and 14 rebounds. George handed out three assists and Bre Hampton-Bey came up with four steals.
As a team, UMass shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the field and 10-of-15 (66.7 percent) at the free throw line, including 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) in the second half. The Spiders were held below 30 percent, going 19-of-68 (27.9 percent).
UMass also had the edge in rebounds, 47-39, and turned 11 offensive boards into 16 points.
The opening moments of the game belonged to Richmond, which initially put together a 9-3 run. A stout defensive effort by the Spiders kept UMass to just one made basket in the first 3:30 of the contest before the sides traded points. Kailyn Fee nailed a three-pointer with 1:08 left to close the quarter with the Spiders ahead 15-14.
A first half with five lead changes wrapped up in similar fashion to the first quarter as both teams continued to exchange baskets before UMass headed into the locker room ahead by a 27-22 score.
Richmond would come out firing on all cylinders to start the third frame, going on an 12-2 run. After Dee Hatcher put down a layup with 6:10 on the clock, the Minutewomen used their first timeout to regroup. From that point on UMass clawed away at a five-point deficit before heading into the final stanza down just one point at 37-36.
The Minutewomen regained the lead for good with 8:31 on the clock, courtesy of a jumper in the paint from McDerment. Helped in part by clutch free throw shooting down the stretch, UMass would swell that advantage to as much as nine, forcing the Spiders into foul trouble and putting Hampton-Bey, Paige McCormick and Mulligan on the line in the final 2:30 of play.
Richmond's Micaela Parson had 24 points to lead all scorers and Alicia Hudalla posted nine points and 11 boards.
UMass, which snapped a 14-game losing streak against the Spiders dating back to 2007, improves to 13-15 on the season and 5-10 in the Atlantic 10. Richmond is now 12-16 overall and 7-8 against league foes. The 13 overall wins for the Minutewomen are the team's most since 2007-08.
UMass closes the regular season with Senior Day and Alumnae Day on Sat., Feb. 24 in a noon game against Rhode Island at the Mullins Center.
