Mulligan records double-double, four Minutewomen notch double-figure scoring
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball had four double-figure scorers and never trailed as the Minutewomen defeated Rhode Island, 87-50, on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center. Prior to the game, UMass held a special ceremony recognizing seniors Leah McDerment and Maggie Mulligan and the duo's contributions to the program over the last four years.
In addition, numerous UMass women's basketball alumnae were on hand and honored in-game.
Massachusetts now waits for the rest of Saturday's Atlantic 10 games to go final to determine its final seeding and opponent for the Atlantic 10 Championship First Round, which will take place on Tues., Feb. 27 at campus sites. The conference will announce the full tournament bracket following Saturday's games.
McDerment played in her 119th career game, tying former Minutewoman Kim Benton (2006-10) for the program's all-time record in that category. Her start was also the 100th of her career.
Mulligan (16 points, 11 rebounds) turned in her third double-double in the last four games and also had three assists and three blocks. Those three swats moved her season total to 65, which ranks second all-time at UMass for a single campaign. Kate Mills blocked 68 shots in 2007-08 to set the current record.
Hailey Leidel led all scorers with 25 points on 9-of-18 from the floor, while Mulligan (16), Paige McCormick (16) and Bre Hampton-Bey (14) also contributed double-figure efforts. Hampton-Bey dished out a team-high six assists. Jessica George came off the bench to contribute eight points plus three steals for the Minutewomen.
UMass stretched its lead to 10 midway through the second quarter and did not allow Rhode Island to get back within single digits. That was helped in part by a strong shooting effort as the Minutewomen wrapped up the day 32-of-69 (46.4 percent) from the field, which would not overshadow the team's solid effort at the free throw line (16-of-17; 94.1 percent).
In the fourth quarter UMass strung together a 14-2 run to put the icing on the cake. In the middle of that stretch Genesis Rivera came up with a beautiful block of Nicole Jorgensen. George immediately corralled the loose ball and drew a foul at the other end of the floor, banking both subsequent free throws.
UMass also had the edge in rebounds by a 44-33 margin.
Marta Vargas led Rhode Island with 10 points while Jorgensen was fantastic on the glass with 15 rebounds. As a team the Rams had 16 assists on 19 total baskets.
UMass' third consecutive win puts the Minutewomen at 14-15 overall and 6-10 in the Atlantic 10 to wrap up the regular season. The 14 overall wins and six conference triumphs are the most for the squad since the Minutewomen went 17-13 and 7-7 in the A-10 during the 2006-07 campaign. Rhode Island is now 3-26 and 1-15 in the league.
