Late Women’s Hoops Comeback Falls Short at George Washington, 55-49
February 14, 2018 | Women's Basketball
Mulligan posts 60th block of season, tying career-high
WASHINGTON – A valiant fourth quarter comeback effort came up just short as the UMass women's basketball team fell to George Washington, 55-49, on Wednesday night at the Charles E. Smith Center. Maggie Mulligan had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, both of which were game-highs.
Mulligan also came up with a block in the third quarter, moving her season total to 60 which matches her career-high set as a junior in 2016-17. That figure stands third all-time in UMass history, with former Minutewoman Kate Mills holding the top two positions at 68 (2007-08) and 64 (2006-07), respectively.
Hailey Leidel continued a similar ascent up the Massachusetts record book, putting down a pair of three-pointers. The sophomore has now drained 75 triples throughout the 2017-18 season, three short of tying the program record (78). Both Leidel (2016-17) and Cerie Mosgrove (2010-11) previously accomplished that feat. Leidel also was free of turnovers in her 32 minutes played on Wednesday.
UMass took charge midway through the first quarter, constructing a 7-0 run off the help of Bre Hampton-Bey, Leidel and Mulligan. Hampton-Bey shot 3-of-4 during the opening frame and Leidel came up with four boards.
A stout defensive effort by GW in the second quarter helped the Colonials string together a 15-0 run over the final 7:28 before halftime. That sequence culminated when GW's Mei-Lyn Bautista banked a three-pointer from the near right wing, beating the halftime buzzer and sending the home squad into the break with a 30-17 advantage.
In spite of facing a deficit of as much as 16 points in the third quarter, the Minutewomen refused to give up. UMass finally cut the GW lead back to single digits with 3:40 left in regulation when a missed 3-pointer by Paige McCormick was corralled underneath by Jessica George. McCormick ultimately saved the ball in front of the UMass bench and set up Mulligan in the paint to move the score to 48-39 in favor of George Washington.
With less than one minute left and forced to foul, UMass put GW's Lexus Levy on the free throw line before Levy missed both attempts, keeping the score at 51-43. Following the second miss, McCormick grabbed the rebound, but the Minutewomen were unable to convert on the ensuing trip up the floor. After GW later went back to the charity stripe, Leah McDerment (2) and McCormick converted layups to continue the comeback effort before running out of time.
Bautista had 15 points for the Colonials while Neila Luma grabbed 11 rebounds.
Massachusetts falls to 11-15 on the season and 3-10 in the Atlantic 10, while the Colonials are now 13-12 overall and 8-5 against league foes.
