Minutemen Win Three Events, Burton Sets Program Top-Five Mark In Season Opener

UMass take top spots in 60 meter hurdles, 200 meter and 300 meter dashes at the Alden Invitational.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three individuals posted event wins and senior Evan Burton improved his ranking in the UMass record book as the men's track and field squad opened its 2018-19 indoor season at the unscored Alden Invitational, hosted by Brown University on Saturday.

Senior Jake DeGrace won the 60 meter hurdles final with a time of 8.40, while classmate Evan Burton landed in the top-three in both weight throw (second) and shot put (third). Burton's throw of 57 feet, 2.75 inches was a new personal record and moved him up to fourth all-time in the UMass record book. In shot put, he threw 47 feet, 2.25 inches.

In his UMass debut, freshman Jordan Howard won the 200 meter dash in 22.91. Hayden Gray placed fourth in the event with a time of 23.18. Howard also landed in the top-five in the 60 meter dash behind David Edevbie (3rd, 7.03), taking fourth in 7.05 seconds. Gray was fifth at 7.07 seconds.

Junior Michael Cuthbert claimed the top spot in 300 meter dash at 35.03 seconds, while Edevbie was third (35.94) and freshman Lucas Honohan placed sixth (36.25).

In 500 meters, four Minutemen placed in the top eight, paced by Colin Stoddard in third with a time of 1 minute, 7.84 seconds. Junior Kevin Shannon (1:07.90), freshman Michael Shannon (1:08.24) and senior Jonathan Collins (1:11.25) were fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively.

Senior Kyle Guzman and junior Nicholas Santos were third (2:34.02) and fifth (2:36.87) in the 1,000 meter run. In the mile, senior Zach Frahlich took third (4:20.16) and freshman Tyler Griffin placed seventh (4:30.01).

Junior Eric Waterman ran to fourth in the 3K, clocking in at 8 minutes, 56.94 seconds and the Minutemen's 4x400 meter relay squad of Colin Stoddard, Michael Shannon, Honohan, and Kevin Shannon combined for a third-place time of 3 minutes, 27.54 seconds to round out UMass' top performances on the track.

Senior Myles McDermott landed second in long jump at 22 feet, 1.75 inches and junior Noah Kortkamp placed third with a mark of 21 feet, 7.25 inches. Sophomore Sam Darkwa, Jr. was second in triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 3.25 inches and sophomore Andrew Pondiscio claimed third in high jump at 6 feet, 1.5 inches.

Sophomore Jack Perry cleared 12 feet, 5.5 inches in pole vault, good for seventh at the meet.

UMass will return to action Jan. 11-12 with the Beantown Multi Meet and the Beantown Challenge at Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
