Balanced Effort and Newcomers Help Minutewomen Down Sacred Heart, 78-61

November 06, 2018 | Women's Basketball

Hampton-Bey leads Massachusetts with 19 points and seven rebounds

AMHERST, Mass. – Led in part by 19 points from sophomore point guard Bre Hampton-Bey, University of Massachusetts women's basketball defeated Sacred Heart, 78-61, on Tuesday night at the Mullins Center. The season-opening win puts the Minutewomen at 1-0 out of the gate, while Sacred Heart drops to 0-1. It also gave UMass back-to-back season-opening wins and its third consecutive triumph in a home lid-lifter.

In addition to Hampton-Bey, freshman Destiney Philoxy (16), junior Hailey Leidel (13) and redshirt freshman Anil Soysal (11) logged double-figure scoring performances. Senior Jessica George had a game-high and career-high seven assists in the win while Hampton-Bey had five dimes. On the glass, Hampton-Bey and Leidel each came down with seven rebounds while George grabbed six boards, all at the defensive end.

Collectively, the Maroon and White out-rebounded the visiting side by a 40-27 margin and shot 51.5 percent (35-of-68) from the floor. Sacred Heart tallied a 37.5 percent (21-of-56) night shooting. However, the Minutewomen were held to just four attempts from the free throw line, converting three.

As the first quarter progressed the teams exchanged baskets, seeing two ties and three lead changes. But the Minutewomen closed the frame with the final six points, a sequence that was highlighted by a fast break layup from Philoxy. George caused a deflection and saved the loose ball in front of the UMass bench, then hit Philoxy with a nice pass that was capped with a left-hand layup at the 1:37 mark.

A 15-3 run early in the second stanza combined with a strong defensive effort paved the way to a UMass lead that would stand the balance of the game. Sacred Heart was held to just 1-of-13 in the frame and on the defensive end, UMass forced five Pioneer turnovers which resulted in eight points.

Although Sacred Heart worked to claw its way back in the fourth quarter, the Minutewomen had built up an insurmountable lead. The Pioneers forced four turnovers in the final 10 minutes and received nine points in the period from Adrianne Hagood plus seven from Candice Leatherwood.

George, Hampton-Bey and freshman Asia McCoy each had a pair of steals to open the campaign.

For Sacred Heart, Erin Storck had a game-high 20 points, but was limited to just seven in the second half on 3-of-5 shooting.

In total, four Minutewomen made their collegiate debut in Soysal as well as true freshmen Madison Lowery, McCoy and Philoxy.

Massachusetts now turns its attention to a Sun., Nov. 11 game at Towson. Tip from SECU Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m.
