Early Surge Puts Towson Over Women’s Hoops, 78-53

Minutewomen return to the Mullins Center on Nov. 17 against Central Connecticut
TOWSON, Md. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball was held to just 21 percent from the field in the first half and Towson capitalized early en route to a 78-53 victory over the Minutewomen on Sunday at SECU Arena. With the outcome, both teams now sit at an even 1-1 on the young season.
Sophomore Bre Hampton-Bey led the Minutewomen with 12 points and junior Hailey Leidel contributed 11 points, all in the second half. Senior Genesis Rivera grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and Hampton-Bey had four steals on the afternoon.
It was a tough shooting day for the Minutewomen as a team as the visiting side was held to 16-of-59 (27.1 percent) from the field while Towson countered with a 42.9 percent (30-of-70) effort.
After a back-and-forth stretch in the game's first five minutes, the Tigers closed the opening quarter with a 16-3 run and would not look back. A strong defensive showing kept UMass without a field goal for the final four minutes, 10 seconds during which Towson put down 12 unanswered points.
As the game progressed, the Tigers continued to build upon their advantage and held a double-digit lead for the final three periods.
Leidel now has 954 points in her career–46 from becoming the 20th member of the 1,000-point club at UMass.
For Towson, Kionna Jeter was lights out with 27 points and Jalynn Holmes put down 16 of her own. The Tigers forced 25 Massachusetts turnovers, converting that into 25 points. Towson also had the edge in the paint, 32-18.
Next on the docket for the Minutewomen is a Sat., Nov. 17 contest against New England rival Central Connecticut State. Tip off from the Mullins Center is set for 2 p.m.
