Big First Half Helps Minutewomen Over CCSU, 74-59

Head coach Tory Verdi collected the 100th victory of his head coaching career
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball senior Jessica George led the Minutewomen with a career-high 16 points to help the Maroon and White pick up a 74-59 victory over Central Connecticut on Saturday at the Mullins Center. With the result, head coach Tory Verdi earned the 100th victory of his head coaching career.
UMass is 2-1 following Saturday's outcome while the Blue Devils drop to 0-4 on the season.
Junior Hailey Leidel poured in 14 points and redshirt freshman Anil Soysal had 10 of her own. Sophomore Bre Hampton-Bey contributed a team-high nine rebounds and three Minutewomen in Leidel, Soysal and senior Genesis Rivera finished with seven apiece. Hampton-Bey also dished out seven assists, two short of tying a career-high.
Off the bench, freshman Jessica Nelson made her collegiate debut with two points, three rebounds and a block while sophomore Paige McCormick saw her first action of the 2018-19 season after returning from injury.
After CCSU won the opening tip and Kiana Patterson hit a straightaway three-pointer, the Minutewomen answered with a quick 10-0 run and never relinquished their lead. Another double-digit sequence early in the second stanza padded the margin to as much as 18 points before halftime. Out of the break, the second half was largely a game of trading baskets as the Blue Devils chipped away at the deficit.
On the day, CCSU landed 16 points each from Andi Lydon and Emma McCamus, 12 of which for Lydon came in the second half. For the home side, although the Minutewomen went to the free throw line 34 times the squad made just 23 attempts (67.6 percent).
The Minutewomen are back on the Mullins Center hardwood on Tues., Nov. 20 for a 7 p.m. game against UT Rio Grande Valley.
