VCU Takes Defensive Battle From Field Hockey, 2-0

Minutewomen split Richmond weekend after Rams tally two second half goals

RICHMOND, Va. – VCU's Emily McNamara potted the only two goals of the match as the Rams came away with a 2-0 victory in a defensive battle with University of Massachusetts field hockey on Sunday at Cary Street Field. The Minutewomen, who split their weekend in Richmond, fall to 6-8 with the loss and 4-2 in the Atlantic 10. VCU is now 7-5 and 4-0 against league opponents.

Freshman goalkeeper Johanna von dem Borne collected three saves before being replaced in the 65th minute with graduate student Clodagh Moloney at kicking back. For VCU, Sasha Elliot needed one stop for the clean sheet.

After a scoreless first half and an exchange of possessions early in the second, McNamara broke the ice in the 56th minute. On a penalty corner inserted toward the left of the circle, McNamara received the ball from Maite Sturm and whacked a shot into the left corner of the cage.

With the score remaining 1-0 in the final minutes of regulation, the Minutewomen appeared to equalize when sophomore Lucy Cooper directed a pass into the circle. Although freshman Chloe Hillier was in position to deflect the feed home, a back stick was ruled, ending the threat and returning possession to the Rams.

McNamara added insurance in the 68th minute after von dem Borne was lifted. After the Minutewomen were awarded a 16-yard hit, on the ensuing possession VCU forced a turnover and quickly set up McNamara for her shot into the empty cage.

UMass earned just one penalty corner on the afternoon, compared to five for the Rams. VCU had the edge in total shots, 13-4, as well as on-target attempts, 5-1.

Massachusetts returns to the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex and continues Atlantic 10 play on Fri., Oct. 12 with a 3 p.m. game against Saint Francis.
