October 12, 2018 | Field Hockey
Massachusetts spots four in final 35 minutes to pick up key Atlantic 10 win
AMHERST, Mass. – A total of four Minutewomen potted goals as University of Massachusetts field hockey claimed a 5-2 victory from Saint Francis on Friday afternoon at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. With the outcome, UMass is now 7-8 overall and 5-2 in the Atlantic 10, while the Red Flash drop to 8-8 on the campaign including a 4-3 mark against league foes.
Sophomore Lucy Cooper finished with four points on a goal and two assists while sophomore Georgie McTear had four points of her own via pair of tallies. Junior Antonet Louw buried the game-winner in the 36th minute and freshman Mus Defauwes added some insurance in the 40th minute with her first collegiate goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Johanna von dem Borne saw 52 minutes of action and made two saves before being relieved by redshirt freshman Megan Davies (5 saves). For the Red Flash, Elizabeth Dyer made nine stops against four goals and Claudia Marzec finished the contest with three saves on four shots in the final 17 minutes.
McTear put the Minutewomen on the board exactly 10 minutes into the match, finishing a penalty corner inserted by Cooper and stopped by sophomore Bailey McNamara. After a perfect stop by McNamara at the top of the circle, McTear stepped to the ball and quickly blasted her shot through the defense and into the cage.
But Saint Francis quickly countered, equalizing in the 13th minute. Brea Seabrook fired an initial shot that von dem Borne turned aside, but the rebound came to Hannah Retherford who cleaned up the loose change from near the left post.
Fresh out of halftime, Louw scored her team-high 15th goal of the season to give UMass the lead for good. Cooper once again provided the corner insert that came to junior Sophie de Jonge, before Louw went to her drag flick and sailed the ball home.
Less than four minutes later, Defauwes doubled the lead to 3-1 for the home side. Junior Sara Davis received a perfectly-timed pass and was set up for an opportunity in the circle, but was denied by Dyer. Defauwes quickly swooped in to collect the carom and log her first goal as a Minutewoman.
UMass padded its lead with additional goals from Cooper (52') and McTear (61'), building an advantage of as much as four. Saint Francis wrapped up the day's scoring with a tally in the 69th minute from Seabrook.
Massachusetts now embarks on a three-game break from Atlantic 10 play and heads to No. 12 nationally ranked Boston College on Sun., Oct. 14 for a 2 p.m. game in Newton, Massachusetts.
