Minutewomen Open Richmond Trip With 2-0 Victory Over Spiders
October 05, 2018 | Field Hockey
McTear and Louw provide goals; von dem Borne posts six saves in shutout
RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore Georgie McTear and junior Antonet Louw provided all the offense Massachusetts would need as the Minutewomen claimed a 2-0 victory over Richmond on Friday at Crenshaw Field. The win is UMass' third in a row in Atlantic 10 play and improves the squad to 6-7 overall (4-1 Atlantic 10), while the Spiders drop to 3-9 on the season (1-2 Atlantic 10).
Freshman goalkeeper Johanna von dem Borne posted her first career solo shutout with six saves, while Richmond's Emily Braunewell made one stop over the course of the match.
McTear put the Minutewomen ahead in the 27th minute by way of a penalty corner. On the second of back-to-back corner attempts, sophomore Lucy Cooper inserted to classmate Bailey McNamara, who left the ball to McTear for a shot that traveled straight through Braunewell into the cage for a 1-0 lead.
UMass took advantage of a penalty stroke in doubling its advantage in the 44th minute. After freshman Mus Defauwes carried the ball into the circle and toward the baseline, Defauwes was taken down via a hard push that led to a stoppage in play.
In addition to a yellow card that was issued, the umpire awarded a stroke that was ultimately taken by Louw. She stepped to the penalty spot and went left over Braunewell for what proved to be the final goal of the match and her team-leading 14th of the season.
Richmond did have chances to chase the shutout in the final stages of regulation with two penalty corners as time expired, but von dem Borne and the UMass defense stepped up to preserve the clean sheet and bring the contest to an end.
In spite of the result on the scoreboard, it was Richmond that came out with the edge in shots on goal (6-3) as well as penalty corners (5-3).
Massachusetts remains in the city of Richmond for the weekend and closes its trip on Sun., Oct. 7 at VCU. Start time in that match is set for 1 p.m. at Cary Street Field.
