Football Falls To Coastal Carolina, 24-13
October 20, 2018 | Football
Garcia connected on two field goals, Isabella pulled in 10 catches and Barr had 11 tackles
Isabella was redshirt senior quarterbacks Andrew Ford and Ross Comis' most frequent target as the duo went 25-for-43 for 390 yards and one touchdown. Ford was 20-of-34 for 326 yards and the lone passing touchdown before exiting with an injury. Comis went 5-for-9 with 64 yards.
In addition to Isabella, junior wide receiver Sadiq Palmer hauled in seven catches covering 139 yards, which included a 22-yard touchdown in the third quarter. On the ground, redshirt junior running back Jordan Fredericks got the start in place of an injured Marquis Young and posted 70 yards rushing on only seven carries.
Graduate student linebacker Bryton Barr, who entered the game among the nation's leading tackles, had 11 stops and recovered a fumble. Brice McAllister added 10 stops from his spot in the secondary while Jarell Addo totaled nine, including a two-yard TFL.
Neither offense found its groove until the second half, as the teams combined for nine total points and Massachusetts edged ahead, 6-3, thanks to a pair of Cooper Garcia field goals.
Garcia connected from 21 yards out during the game's opening drive and added a 39-yard conversion as the only points of the second quarter. Missimo Biscardi hit on a 28-yard attempt for Coastal Carolina following Garcia's first field goal, but Biscardi also missed on tries from tries from 34 and 48 yards.
Coastal Carolina, which possessed the ball for nearly 12 minutes more than Massachusetts, methodically worked its way down the field in the third quarter and took the lead for the first time. Marcus Outlow capped the 15-play, 78-yard series with a 1-yard touchdown plunge and gave the Chanticleers a 10-6 advantage with six minutes, 50 seconds to go in the third.
Massachusetts needed only four plays and 1:53 on the clock for a response, and pushed back in front, 13-10. Palmer capped the drive with his 22-yard endzone catch and was the featured receiver on the series, during which Ford targeted Palmer third times and the junior wideout hauled in all three chances for 45 yards.
However, the UMass offense fell silent the remainder of the way and Coastal Carolina connected on back-to-back scores as the Chanticleers pulled away for the 11-point win. Malcolm Williams snuck behind the UMass secondary for a 61-yard touchdown with 2:42 remaining in the third before CJ Marable secured a 21-yard TD with 12:02 to go in the fourth.
Massachusetts hits the road for a trip to the University of Connecticut next. The Minutemen face the Huskies at Pratt and Whitney Stadium in East Hartford, Connecticut, on Sat., Oct. 27. Kickoff on ESPNU is slated for Noon.
