Davis’ Double-Double Puts Fordham Over Women’s Basketball, 62-51

Maggie Mulligan turns in 21-point effort on 10-of-15 shooting
AMHERST, Mass. – Maggie Mulligan dropped a season-high 21 points, but a double-double by Fordham's G'mrice Davis (18 points, 14 rebounds) along with a 23-point clip by Bre Cavanaugh paced the Rams past University of Massachusetts women's basketball, 62-51, on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
With the setback, UMass is now 8-7 on the season and 0-2 in Atlantic 10 play, while Fordham moves to 11-4 overall and 2-0 in A-10 action.
Mulligan additionally grabbed six rebounds and posted two blocks, while Leah McDerment and Vashnie Perry each contributed three assists. UMass shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the field on the night, in contrast to the Rams' 42.6 percent line (26-of-61).
The Minutewomen jumped out to a strong start, stringing together an 8-0 run midway through the first quarter and leading by as many as nine points. That sequence culminated with a beautiful steal by McDerment that saw her drive coast-to-coast for a fast break layup with 2:51 on the clock. Mulligan notched 10 points in the quarter and UMass forced six Fordham turnovers, helping the Maroon and White to an 18-12 advantage after 10 minutes and a 30-27 score at the half.
Coming out of halftime the tables began to turn. Although the teams would exchange baskets for much of the quarter, Fordham raced to a 15-8 run to start the frame and would not relinquish its subsequent lead. Hot shooting was the story for the Rams, who posted an even 55 percent (11-of-20) from the field to complement 15 rebounds. The former was a significant jump after compiling a 37.9 percent effort in the first half.
Massachusetts dominated the paint by a 32-18 difference, but Fordham grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and converted that into 13 second chance points.
Cavanaugh and Zara Jillings each had five assists for Fordham while Cavanaugh grabbed a team-best three steals.
UMass visits St. Bonaventure for a Sat., Jan. 6 game with an early 11 a.m. start time. The matchup will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.
