Cooper scores in loss at Underhill Field
BERKELEY, Calif. - University of Massachusetts field hockey took an early lead, but California rallied back for a 2-1 victory at Underhill Field in Berkeley, California on Friday evening. Freshman Lucy Cooper scored the lone Minutewoman goal on the evening. The loss drops UMass to 2-1 on the season while Cal improves to 1-2.
Cooper connected for her third goal of the season only 88 seconds into the contest. Cooper took play from Cal's Maddie Ashbrook and capitalized on the turnover for an early one-goal lead.
California answered in the eighth minute and evened the game at 1-all when Katrina Carter scored on a feed from Mara Guitierrez. The score remained knotted into the second half before Megan Rodgers tapped in the eventual game-winner for the Bears in the 41st minute.
Cal nearly added a third goal six minutes later when Carter posted an on-target shot at the 47:14 mark; however, Emily Hazard turned aside the attempt for one of her five stops. Hazard was called into action again 86 seconds later when Maddie Cleat challenged the UMass goalkeeper, but Hazard was up for the challenge again - her second of four saves in the second half.
Cooper nearly added a second score in the 61st minute. Her shot evaded Bears goalkeeper Danielle Mentink, but defender Valen Garraffo stepped in and cleared the ball away to prevent the equalizer.
California led in shots, 20-9 and on-target attempts, 7-6. The Bears also held an advantage in corners, 8-1. Both teams finished with five saves.
