Cooper tallies team-leading fourth goal of season in 3-1 loss
STANFORD, Calif. - University of Massachusetts field hockey freshman Lucy Cooper tallied her team-leading fourth goal of the season and her second of the weekend, but No. 13 Stanford used precision offense and pushed by the Minutewomen, 3-1 at the Cardinal's Varsity Field Hockey Turf on Sunday. Massachusetts dropped to 2-2 with the loss while Stanford improved to 2-2.
Stanford scored one minute, 58 seconds in for an early lead thanks to a goal from Marissa Cicione. Just over seven minutes later, the Cardinal doubled their advantage when Corinne Zanolli converted Stanford's lone penalty corner opportunity of the game.
The contest settled into a scoreless outing until Stanford notched their third goal - Zanolli's second of the day - in the 51st minute. Zanolli fielded a pass from Cicione and rebounded a shot into the bottom-right of the cage for the tally.
Cooper put Massachusetts on the scoreboard in the 64th minute on a cross from Sarah Hawkshaw as Cooper took one touch to field a right-bound cross from Hawkshaw and knock it into the back of the cage.
Massachusetts led in shots, 14-11 and on-target attempts, 10-7. The Minutewomen also held a noteworthy lead in penalty corners, 11-1. Emily Hazard took the loss with four saves made. Kelsey Bing started in net for Stanford and totaled six stops for the win. Maddy Belin relieved Bing in the 52nd minute and earned two saves while she also allowed Cooper's goal.
The Minutewomen return home for a Fri., Sept. 8 game vs. Sacred Heart at 5 p.m. It is part of a two-game homestand that includes a Sun., Sept. 10 tilt against Boston University on Sun., Sept. 10 at 1 p.m.
