UMass Field Hockey Picked to Win Atlantic 10 Conference

Minutewomen garner six first place votes, Hawkshaw and Kreusch named preseason all-conference
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Head coaches from across the Atlantic 10 Conference selected University of Massachusetts field hockey as the league preseason favorite for the 2017 Atlantic 10 Conference Regular Season Championship on Tuesday. The Minutewomen, who will be in the hunt for their league-leading 17th conference title, were chosen first with 77 total points and six of a possible nine first place votes.
Additionally, senior midfielder Sarah Hawkshaw and senior defender Melanie Kreusch were voted to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team. Hawkshaw was an NFHCA Second Team All-American in 2016 and led the squad with 36 points via 16 goals and four assists. Kreusch, the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, organized the backline from her spot at center defense and contributed 13 points through six goals and an assist on during 2016.
Saint Joseph's followed closely behind Massachusetts with 71 points and two first place votes. Richmond collected third with 68 points and one first place vote. VCU (48), Lock Haven (43), Saint Francis (31), La Salle (28), Davidson (24) and Saint Louis (15) rounded out the poll.
Head coach Barb Weinberg begins her first season at the helm of the program when Massachusetts opens 2017 against Holy Cross at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Fri., Aug. 25 at 1 p.m. The Minutewomen also host Vermont during their home-opening weekend for a Sun., Aug. 27 game at 1 p.m.
