Men’s Track and Field Sits Second at A-10’s After Day One

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's track and field currently sits second in the team standings at the Atlantic 10 Championships, which the squad is hosting at the UMass Track & Field Complex. The Minutemen trail only leader Rhode Island (78.5 points), currently with 48 points, just in front of third-place George Mason's 46 points and Saint Louis (32 points) is fourth out of 10 teams through seven scored events.
 
Senior Kris Horn collected UMass' first medal of the championships, earning bronze in long jump at 23 feet, 3.25 inches. Freshman Hunter Gray claimed eighth with a leap of 21 feet, 8.75 inches.
 
Horn also sits in first through five events in decathlon with 3,926 points, aided by first-place finishes in long jump (866 points), shot put (731) points and high jump (767 points), while claiming second in 100 meter dash (832 points) and fourth in the 400 meter dash (730 points). Sophomore Jonathan Collins follows in second with 3,645 points after ending the day with a runner-up showing in high jump (714 points) and a win in 400 meter dash (794 points). Freshman Hunter Gray is currently fourth with 3,645 points.
 
The Minutemen picked up a pair of medals in pole vault. Junior Brendan Lloyd cleared 15 feet, 5 inches, for a silver medal. Junior John Chuma claimed bronze, tying for third at 15 feet, 5 inches. In high jump, sophomore Cole Acoveno placed fourth at 6 feet, 3.5 inches and senior Adam Bonfilio was eighth at 6 feet, 1.5 inches.
 
UMass scored two in hammer throw with junior Evan Burton placing fourth with a 161-foot, 11-inch toss, while senior Brett Davies earned seventh with a mark of 144 feet, 8 inches. Sophomore John Long placed fourth in javelin with a throw of 195 feet, 9 inches.
 
Senior Blake Croteau scored in the 10,000 meter run for the Minutemen, crossing the finish line in fourth with a time of 31 minutes, 20.93 seconds. In the only other finals event on the track on day one, 3,000m steeplechase, UMass landed two runners in the top-eight. Freshman Dawson Bathgate posted a time of 9 minutes, 22.28 seconds for fifth, and freshman Erik Engstrom was eighth in 9 minutes, 28.02 seconds.
 
UMass will return action at the UMass Track & Field Complex tomorrow, May 7, with day two of the Atlantic 10 Championships beginning with decathlon 110 meter hurdles at 9 a.m.
