Baseball Outlasted by Davison, 5-2 in 10 Innings

May 19, 2017 | Baseball

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball was deadlocked with Davidson in a scoreless game through nine innings, but the Wildcats (27-23, 13-11 A-10) managed to plate five in the 10th to take the season finale from the Minutemen (15-32, 8-16 A-10), by a 5-2 margin. The contest marked the final game for retiring UMass head coach Mike Stone and the program's seven-member senior class, who were honored with pregame ceremonies on Friday at Earl Lorden Field.

Both squads worked out of bases loaded jams in the sixth to preserve the scoreless deadlock. UMass had Cooper Mrowka reach with a one-out single in the ninth and move to second on a ground ball. Freshman Nolan Kessinger was then ruled out at first on a close play to end the inning that extended the game into extras.

A leadoff infield hit by Jake Sidwell, a sacrifice bunt and a walk to Tyler Agard set up  an RBI single by Cam Johnson that gave Davidson a 1-0 lead in the top of the 10th. Will Robertson and Brett Centracchio followed with back-to-back doubles that scored three more for the Wildcats and Eric Jones drove in Davidson's fifth run with a single through the right side.

UMass broke up the shutout with a two-out, two-run home run by senior Jon Avallone in the bottom of the inning, but the Minutemen were unable to complete the comeback.

In his final game in a UMass uniform, senior Mike Geannelis went 9.1 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts and took the loss (5-7). Reliever ZJ Zabinski earned the win (2-1) for Davidson, retiring both batters he faced in the ninth.

The Minutemen finished the contest with six hits, including two from Avallone (2-for-5) and two from Mrowka (2-for-3).
