Tennis Earns Second Seed For Atlantic 10 Championships

Minutewomen will face winner of Duquesne/George Mason on Thursday in Orlando
AMHERST, Mass. – After posting a 9-7 overall record and a perfect 4-0 mark against league teams, the UMass women's tennis team has been seeded second in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament.

The Minutewomen will receive a bye on Wednesday's opening round of competition and will open play against the winner of the No. 7 Duquesne/No. 10 George Mason match at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The championship tournament will be hosted at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando, Fla. Four-time defending A-10 champion VCU was picked as the No. 1 seed for the fifth straight year.

Every match of the championship will be played at the new, state-of-the-art USTA National Campus, which is hosting the A-10 Men's and Women's Tennis Championship for the first time. Admission will be free for the A-10 Championships.Â

The semifinals will be played Saturday at 10:00 am and the championship finale is Sunday at 10:00 am and will be broadcast live on ESPN3. The winner of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

This marks the second straight season that UMass has been ranked as the No. 2 seed in the tournament. Last year, the Minutewomen fell in the quarterfinals snapping a four-year string of reach the semifinals or finals.

UMass won the Atlantic 10 title last in 2001 to earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Minutewomen have reached the semifinals or better seven times.

Brittany Collens leads the Minutewomen in wins this season with 19 in singles play including a 4-0 mark against A-10 teams. She also holds a 14-6 record in doubles play highlighted by a 5-1 record alongside Laura Moreno.

Just behind is Ana Yrazusta who is 16-7 in singles this season including 13-3 in dual matches and a six-match win streak in hand. She partners with Janja Kovacevic at No. 2 doubles where the duo are 11-3 on the year.

Anna Woosley is the team's active career winner with 61 singles victories which stands as the sixth-most in program history.

UMass closed the season winning four of its last five matches including a pair of A-10 victories at Rhode Island and over Fordham. UMass also defeated George Washington and Davidson during the regular season.

This will mark the final A-10 Tournament for head coach Judy Dixon as she is retiring following the season. In 25 years as head coach of the program, Dixon is the all-time winningest coach with a 313-226 record at UMass. In 28 years as a head coach, she is 353-230 overall. Dixon is a member of the USTA New England Hall of Fame and a five-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year.
