Red Storm earn doubles point, three singles victories nipping Minutewomen.

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - A hard-fought match that saw three singles contests go to tie-breakers went the way of the Red Storm on Friday afternoon as St. John's slipped past the UMass tennis team 4-3 at the U.S. National Tennis Center.

The win marked the ninth straight for St. John's which improved to 13-3 overall, while the Minutewomen fell to 7-7 overall. UMass had previously been scheduled to travel to Long Island on Saturday to face Stony Brook, but the match was cancelled due to inclement weather this weekend.

In Friday's action, the Red Storm started the match by securing the doubles point. St. John's won the No. 1 set before the Minutewomen saw Ana Yrazusta and Janja Kovacevic win the No. 2 set (6-4). The Red Storm then picked up a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead.

In singles play, Yrazusta won in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) at the No. 2 match, but St. John's went up 3-1 with wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles. Ruth Crawford and Anna Woosley won at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively, in tie-breaker sets. A win for the Red Storm at No. 5 singles in three sets sealed the team victory for St. John's.

With the cancellation of the Stony Brook match, UMass is scheduled to next play on April 22 at Rhode Island before returning home to the Mullins Center Tennis Courts to host Fordham in the regular-season finale.
