Tennis Closes Weekend with 5-2 Win Over FDU

Minutewomen sweep doubles, win four of six singles matches on Sunday.

AMHERST, Mass. - Thanks to a three-match sweep in doubles and winning four-of-six singles matches, the UMass tennis team defeated Fairleigh Dickinson 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Bay Road Tennis Center. The Minutewomen improve to 3-1 on the year and will head to Washington, D.C., next weekend for a pair of matches at Georgetown and George Washington.

Sunday's action started with the Minutewomen winning all three dual matches to take a 1-0 lead. Ana Yrazusta and Janja Kovacevic won at No. 1 doubles (6-4), while Ruth Crawford and Anna Woosley won at No. 2 doubles (6-3). Martina Bocchi and Laura Moreno completed the sweep taking No. 3 doubles play with a 6-1 score.

In singles action, UMass won the No. 1 and No. 4 matches in straight sets. Crawford won the No. 1 match (6-3, 6-4), while Bocchi won No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-2). Yrazusta dropped her first set at No. 2 singles but rallied back to win the second set 6-2 before winning the tie-breaker set 6-4. Collins won the No. 3 singles match in three sets as well after falling 5-7 in the first before tying the match with a 7-6 second set win. She then won a super tie-breaker set with a 10-7 score.
