February 10, 2017 | Tennis

Hoyas win deciding point in nearly three-hour No. 1 singles match.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The deciding match point at No. 1 singles that took nearly three hours to settle proved the difference maker as Georgetown edged past the UMass women's tennis team 4-3 on Friday afternoon at the Arlington YMCA. The Minutewomen won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to take a 3-2 lead, but the Hoyas picked up a victory at No. 6 singles to tie forcing the No. 1 match to serve as the ultimate match-winner.

In the hard-fought No. 1 contest, Victoire Saperstein won the first set over UMass' Ruth Crawford 7-6. Crawford then forced a tie-breaker by winning the second set 6-4. The third set was again a back-and-forth affair between the two with Saperstein winning 7-6.

The Minutewomen started the day by taking the doubles point for an early 1-0 lead. Ana Yrazusta and Janja Kovacevic won their No. 2 match 7-5 while Brittany Collens and Ashley Avery won at No. 3 by a score of 6-0.

The Hoyas then went up 2-1 with wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles before Kovacevic was able to win at No. 2 singles (7-6, 6-3) to tie the match. Yrazusta's three-set win at No. 2 singles (1-6, 6-1, 6-4) put the Minutewomen back ahead 3-2. Georgetown then tied the match again with a win at No. 6 singles.

The loss drops the Minutewomen to 3-2 on the year with UMass resuming action on Saturday at George Washington with doubles play set to begin at 2 p.m.
