Minutewomen win five-of-six singles matches to clinch A-10 win.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - After winning five-of-six singles matches, the UMass tennis team earned a 6-1 win at George Washington on Saturday afternoon to close out a two-match road swing in the nation's capitol. The Minutewomen improve ot 4-2 on the year in dual matches and will return home to host a pair of matches next Saturday and Sunday at the Bay Road Tennis Center as Boston College and Army visit.
Saturday's win was especially meaningful for the Minutewomen after the Colonials knocked UMass out of the Atlantic 10 Tournament, 4-3, last year.
UMass jumped out quickly to a 1-0 lead after capturing the doubles point on Saturday after the No. 1 pair of Ruth Crawford and Anna Woosley and the No. 2 pair of Ana Yrazusta and Janja Kovacevic each picked up 6-3 victories.
Yrazusta and Woosley then won their singles matches at No. 3 and No. 4 play, respectively, to put the Minutewomen up 3-0. Yrazusta won 6-4, 6-0, while Woosley took her match 6-3, 6-1.
The Colonials then picked up a win at No. 5 singles to close the gap to 3-1, but Kovacevic won her No. 2 match (6-2, 7-6) to clinch the team win. Ruth Crawford won her No. 1 match (7-5, 6-3) six minutes later before Brittany Collens then closed out the match with a three-set win at No. 6 singles (7-5, 5-7, 10-3).
