Men's Hoops Starts Busy Stretch Sunday Vs. Niagara

November 17, 2017 | Men's Basketball

Tip-off at the Mullins Center set for Noon.

AMHERST, Mass. - A stretch of four games in six days begins this Sunday when the UMass men's basketball team hosts Niagara at the Mullins Center for a Noon tip-off. The Minutemen are coming off a week between games after an opening weekend split with a home win over UMass Lowell last Friday before a dramatic overtime loss at Harvard two days later.

The game will be streamed live on the Atlantic 10 Digital Network and broadcast on the UMass Sports Network anchored by flagship station 105.5 FM WEEI. Josh Maurer and Adam Frenier will have the call on both platforms. Tickets are available at the door but fans can order in advance by calling 866-UMASS-TIX or visiting the Mullins Center Box Office.

Along with Sunday's match-up, the Minutemen (1-1) will also host Western Carolina on Tuesday night at the Mullins Center before heading to Brooklyn, New York to take part in the 2017 Barclays Center Classic. UMass will play Minnesota on Friday, Nov. 24 at LIU Brooklyn's Steinberg Wellness Center at Noon before then playing BYU on Saturday, Nov. 25 at the Barclays Center (2:30 PM). Both games will be streamed live online via Stadium/Facebook Live and tickets can be purchased online by visiting www.BarclaysCenter.com.

Entering Sunday's match-up, Luwane Pipkins leads the Minutemen with a 17.0 point per game average while also posting seven boards and 3.5 assists per game so far in his sophomore campaign. Pipkins had his third career 20-plus point performance last Sunday at Harvard where he hit the game-tying three pointer in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime. Pipkins tied the game again with a long-range trey in the final seconds of overtime but the Crimson picked up the win with a three-pointer of their own with 1.9 seconds to go.

Despite limited minutes in the UMass Lowell game, center Rashaan Holloway is UMass' second-leading scorer with a 13.5 point and 6.0 rebound average through two games. He's followed by senior guard C.J. Anderson who is averaging 10.5 points, 3.5 assists, and 3.0 rebounds a night. Malik Hines is the top rebounder with 7.5 boards and 9.0 points.

Anderson figures to play in his 100th career game this week as Sunday will be his 97th appearance.

Niagara (1-1) is coming off a 107-81 loss at Minnesota on Wednesday night after opening the season with a 77-75 win over St. Bonaventure. Kahlil Dukes leads the charge with a 24.5 point per game average to go with 3.5 assists. Matt Scott is averaging nearly a double-double at 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds, while Marvin Prochet is a double-figure scorer and rebounder through two games with 10.0 points and 10.0 rebounds.

UMass is 6-1 all-time against the Purple Eagles with the first meeting being held during the 1973-74 season. Niagara's only win came during the 1976-77 season and the last meeting between the two squads was in 1998-99 with UMass being ranked No. 24 in the country.
