Setting The Scene
University of Massachusetts field hockey hosts its regular season finale on Fri., Oct. 27, welcoming Richmond to the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex for a noon contest.
Ā
Recap In A Minute
The Minutewomen will look to get back on the winning track on Friday after being handed a pair of difficult setbacks last weekend against No. 19 Saint Joseph's (Oct. 20) and Yale (Oct. 22). Melanie Kreusch converted a pair of early penalty corners in the Saint Joseph's game to give UMass a 2-0 lead, but the Hawks exploded for five in the second half to come away victors.
Ā
Yale's Olivia Levieux proved to ink the only goal in that game, helping the Bulldogs preserve a 1-0 win. In the final 10 minutes of regulation, Massachusetts drew three penalty corners and also replaced goalkeeper Emily Hazard with a kicking back, butĀ Sydney Terroso and Yale's circle defense made the appropriate adjustments to keep UMass off the board.
Ā
A Peek Ahead
Massachusetts has clinched a spot in the 2017 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship, which the Minutewomen will host from Nov. 3-4 at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. UMass will be joined in the field by Richmond, Saint Joseph's and VCU, however final seedings are dependent upon the outcomes of matches around the conference on Friday.

HAWK-SMASH
Then-junior midfielder and forward Sarah Hawkshaw won the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship Most Outstanding Player Award with seven points over the two-game slate, split between three goals and one assist. She ended the year with a team-high 16 goals scored, also a single-season career best. The Dublin, Ireland, native is the program's active leader in goals scored with 39 and points recorded with 89.
Ā
Hawkshaw now ranks among the program's all-time scoring leaders. She is seventh in both career goals and in points scored. Next on the list for goals is Jenn Salisbury (1990-93) and Megan Donnelly (1982-85) with 41. Former Minutewoman Katie Kelly (2007-10) is sixth in points with 93.
Ā
Immediate Impacts
Two of Massachusetts' top four scorers through 18 matches are freshmen in Lucy Cooper and Georgie McTear. Cooper, a native of New Zealand, has 19 points via five goals and nine assists. McTear adds 11 points through four goals and three helpers. Cooper has started 16 contests at forward and McTear has started each game spending time at midfield and defense.

Let Us Know How We Can Assist You
With an even two assists per game as a team, UMass ranks second in that category among the Atlantic, short only of Saint Joseph's (2.22). On an individual level, the Minutewomen are also represented as Lucy Cooper (0.53) is third in the league.

The Vet In Net
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Emily Hazard is in her second season as a starter in the cage for the Minutewomen. Though 17 games, Hazard holds a 1.63 goals-against average and .738 save percentage with 76 stops and 27 tallies allowed in 1,158 minutes of action. She started 17 of 18 contests and posted four shutouts–three individual and one combined with freshman goalkeeper Camille Lecrone.

Back-To-Back Like Jordan '96, '97
UMass field hockey won the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship with a 2-1 victory over Saint Joseph's in the title game on Sat., Nov. 5. It marked the second consecutive season and fourth in the last five years the Minutewomen claimed the league's crown.
Ā
The 2016 title was the team's 16th with the Atlantic 10, more than all other current or former league members combined (13). UMass also went back-to-back in 1992 and '93, won six straight from 1996-2001, claimed the 2007-08 crowns and again won back-to-back in 2012 and '13.
