Hawkshaw’s Hat Trick Sends Field Hockey to A-10 Championship Game

November 04, 2016 | Field Hockey

No. 3 seed Minutewomen down No. 2 Richmond, 3-1 in semifinal round

RICHMOND, Virginia – University of Massachusetts field hockey junior midfielder Sarah Hawkshaw scored her first collegiate hat trick as the Minutewomen downed No. 2 seeded Richmond, 3-1 in the Atlantic 10 Championship Semifinal Round at VCU's Cary Street Field on Fri., Nov. 4. The No. 3 seeded Maroon and White advance to face No. 1 seeded and No. 20 nationally ranked Saint Joseph's at 2 p.m. on Sat., Nov. 5.

Hawkshaw's first strike of the day gave Massachusetts a one-goal advantage at the 19-minute, 26-second mark of the first half. The Dublin, Ireland, native scored on a penalty corner as she dribbled right, reversed into the center of the field and fired down an open shooting lane into the top-right side of the cage.

Hawkshaw doubled the lead during the opening minutes of the second half. With possession, she dribbled to the endline at the left of the Richmond goal, cut toward the near post and snuck a low shot across the goal mouth into the right side of the cage for her second tally of the day.

Richmond climbed back within 2-1 of the Minutewomen with 15:35 to go in the second half after Spiders coach Gina Lucido called timeout and replaced goalkeeper Amanda Hoyt with a kicking back to add an extra field player. Emma Johansson scored her team-leading seventh tally on a pass from Katrina Balatgek.

Hawkshaw offset the Richmond comeback effort with her 14th goal of the year. Hawkshaw won possession in the circle following a corner and hammered in a close-range shot for the third UMass conversion of the afternoon.

The Minutewomen trailed in shots, 13-10 and penalty corners, 9-5, but Emily Hazard turned aside four shots in the cage for the win. Hoyt ended the day with three saves for the Spiders.
