Power-Play Goals Help Ohio State Past UMass Hockey, 3-1

Sophomore Niko Hildenbrand provided the lone tally for the Minutemen, his second of the season.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey was on the board first, but three unanswered, including two power-play goals, helped carry Ohio State past the Minutemen, 3-1 on Friday night at the Mullins Center. The loss snaps UMass' win streak at three games as the Minutemen fall to 3-2-0 on the season, while the Buckeyes improve to 2-1-2 with the victory.
"I thought in the game when we executed how we want to, good things happened for us," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We thought we out-chanced them pretty heavily, but ultimately their goaltender was really good and they've got good skill level and they make you pay. They didn't need a lot of chances tonight to score three goals. We had a lot of chances and could only score one."
UMass took a 1-0 lead 10:01 into the first. Freshmen Austin Albrecht and George Mika set up sophomore Niko Hildenbrand's drive to the net that he finished off for his second of the season. Mika's helper marked his first of his collegiate career.
Ohio State tied things up, though, before the end of the frame. Matt Miller scored off a shot from the point from Sam McCormick and Brendon Kearney off an offensive zone draw at 15:32.
The Buckeyes climbed on top, 2-1, on a 5-on-3 power play opportunity 11:17 into the second period. Mason Jobst knocked the puck in with Matthew Weis and Tanner Laczynski picking up the assists.
Jobst added another power play tally 4:07 into the third period from John Wiitala and Dakota Joshua to give Ohio State the two-goal cushion.
The Minutemen edged the Buckeyes in shots, 25-24, and won 25 of 47 faceoffs (53.1%), paced by Jake Gaudet's 7 for 9 effort (77.8%).
Freshman Matt Murray made his second straight start for UMass and totaled 21 saves, while Sean Romeo stopped 24 for Ohio State.
The teams will be back in action with game two set for tomorrow night, Sat., Oct. 21, an 8 p.m. start at the Mullins Center.
