Hockey Falls To Ohio State, 3-0

October 21, 2017 | Hockey

Freshman Matt Murray made a season-high 29 saves for the Minutemen in the setback.

AMHERST, Mass. – Ohio State scored a goal in each period to defeat University of Massachusetts hockey, 3-0 on Saturday night at the Mullins Center. Following the setback, the Minutemen are now 3-3-0 on the season, while the Buckeyes improve to 3-1-2.

"Tonight was not totally unexpected," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I knew we were going to play a really really good hockey team this weekend and I thought we did a good job last night to play a pretty even game and tonight just wasn't the case. Ohio State is a very good team, a mature, older team, with a lot of juniors and seniors. We just didn't have a lot of energy tonight and they out-classed us. I tip my hat to them, they played a really good game."

Ohio State opened the scoring 11:12 into the first period. Kevin Miller knocked the puck past Matt Murray off a feed from Tanner Laczynski and Dakota Joshua.

The Buckeyes pushed their lead to 2-0 at the 12:19 mark of the second period. Laczynski and Wyatt Ege set up a Janik Moser strike from the high slot that rung under the crossbar.

Freshman Cale Makar narrowly missed putting the Minutemen on the board with less than three minutes to go in the frame, tipping a centering feed just wide on the rush. Matt Murray kept UMass within two in the closing seconds of the period with a stellar glove save on Matt Miller that went to review and was ruled to have not crossed the goal line.

The Minutemen out-shot Ohio State 9-8 in the final stanza, but Buckeyes managed to net their third of the night at the 17:19 mark. Laczynski picked up his third assist of the contest as Matthew Weis slid the puck underneath Murray for the tally.

The Buckeyes finished the game with a 32-23 shot advantage. UMass was a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill and went 0-for-3 on the power play. Murray (2-2-0) totaled 29 saves in net for the Minutemen and his counterpart, Sean Romeo, made 23 stops for Ohio State.

UMass will be back in action next Friday, Oct. 27, when the squad will open Hockey East play at home against Merrimack at 7 p.m.
