THE LEAD: No. 5 Boston University built a 3-0 lead before University of Massachusetts hockey responded with a pair of goals to pull within one, but a pair of late third period tallies helped the Terriers hold off the Minutemen in the teams' Frozen Fenway matchup on Sunday at Fenway Park.

FIRST PERIOD:
Senior Ray Pigozzi narrowly missed putting UMass on top on one of the squad's two power play opportunity in the first period, hitting the post with 3:20 to go in the frame. Then in the closing seconds of the period, Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson gave BU a 1-0 advantage, driving to the net for an unassisted goal at 19:32.

SECOND PERIOD:
Forsbacka Karlsson netted his second of the afternoon 11:33 into the second off a feed from Kieffer Bellows and Patrick Harper out of the corner and the Terriers added a power-play goal from Charlie McAvoy at 13:52 to push the margin to 3-0. Freshman Griff Jeszka netted the Minutemen's first of the game at the 16:55 mark, taking a feed from sophomore Ivan Chukarov and flipping it over the shoulder of BU netminder Jake Oettinger.

THIRD PERIOD:
On the penalty kill in the third, Iacobellis started an odd-man rush up the ice and found Pigozzi in front of the BU net for a shorthanded goal at 8:21 to cut the deficit to one. However, the Terriers managed a pair just 48 seconds apart to regain a three-goal cushion. The first was a backhander from the slot from Chad Krys, while Gabriel Chabot scored on the rush at the 15:39 mark. With goaltender Ryan Wischow pulled for an extra attacker, Iacobellis added UMass' final goal on a redirection 19:08 into the period from sophomore Austin Plevy to complete the scoring.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Boston University finished the contest with a 30-29 edge in shots and went 1-for-5 on the power play, while UMass was 0-for-6.
  • With a goal and an assist, Iacobellis logged his second multi-point game of the season and 15th of his career. It marked his 78th and 79th points of his career, moving him past Casey Wellman (29th) on the UMass all-time scoring list.
  • Jeszka's goal marked his team-leading sixth of the season and his 11th point of the year.
  • Pigozzi's shorthanded tally was the first of his career and fourth goal overall on the season. It was the Minutemen's first shorthanded goal of the season, as well.
  • Plevy's assisted marked his eighth of the year as he is now tied for the team lead in helpers and points (13). Nine of his 13 points have come in Hockey East play.
  • Wischow finished with 25 saves for the Minutemen, while his counterpart, Oettinger, stopped 26 for BU.
UP NEXT: UMass returns home next Sat., Jan. 14, to play host to its first meeting of the season with No. 6 UMass Lowell at 7 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
