THE BASICS:

THE LEAD: Kurt Keats scored late in the third to halve the Minutemen's deficit, but University of Massachusetts hockey was unable to complete the comeback against No. 6 UMass Lowell, falling 2-1 to the River Hawks in a non-conference matchup on Saturday night at the Mullins Center.
FIRST PERIOD:
Four-and-a-half minutes into the game, UMass had a shorthanded scoring chance on a partial breakaway, but sophomore Austin Plevy was stopped at the doorstep. The River Hawks took a 1-0 lead at the 8:17 mark. Off a faceoff to Ryan Wischow's right, Ryan Lohin collected a bouncing puck and shot it past Wischow, blocker side.
SECOND PERIOD:
UMass Lowell extended its lead to 2-0, 10:01 into the second. Chris Forney buried a rebound from the slot from Connor Wilson and Lohin. Senior Steven Iacobellis nearly cut the deficit in half with 5:52 to go in the period, redirecting a shot alone in front. However, netminder Tyler Wall smothered the puck to keep the Minutemen off the board.
THIRD PERIOD:
UMass began the third with 52 seconds of a 5x3 power play after a cross-checking call against Michael Kapla with 17 seconds to go in the second, but were unable to convert on the opportunity. Keats added the Minutemen's lone goal in the contest at the 12:47 mark, taking a turnover by Wall and depositing it into an open net.

UP NEXT: UMass will be back in action next Friday, Jan. 20, when the squad will travel to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, to face No. 8 Boston College in a 7 p.m. Hockey East matchup.

- Keats netted his fifth goal of the season for a new career high and is now tied for the team scoring lead with 13 points, also a new career best.
- Wischow finished the contest with 35 saves for the Minutemen, while Wall had 14 stops in net for the River Hawks.
